Genden Phuntsok carries Tenzing Norgay's story through the 1953 summit, but he is not the only actor playing the role. Director Jennifer Peedom cast three Tibetan actors to portray Norgay at different ages, a structural choice that Deadline's review named as a source of the film's strength.
Samdrup Dorje Lama Opens the Film as a Boy
Samdrup Dorje Lama plays Tenzing as a young boy, the son of a yak herder growing up in a remote Tibetan village. Reviews describe this early section as the origin of Tenzing's lifelong fixation on the mountain his people call Chomolungma, a fascination sparked by watching a foreign expedition arrive in his childhood home.

Little public information exists yet on Lama himself. The Hollywood Reporter's review called his young Tenzing adorable, and the early scenes he carries set up the fascination that drives the rest of the film.
Lama was also at the Nepal premiere on September 28, 2026, the special charity screening organized by the British Embassy in Kathmandu at QFX Civil Mall.

Our team met him there, and Bhuwan Bharati, Chief Executive Officer of Wilderness Film Productions & Wilderness Outdoors, was photographed with him at the event.
Tenzin Dalha Plays Tenzing as a Young Man
Tenzin Dalha takes over the role once Tenzing reaches his early twenties, playing the version of the character who works his way into an Everest expedition against real odds. Dalha is an Indian actor of Tibetan origin, born in Lhasa and raised in New Delhi. His earlier credits include Margarita with a Straw, Axone, The Family Man, and Guilty.

The Playlist's Telluride review noted that Dalha, who plays Tenzing in his late teens and twenties, brings more on-screen charisma to the role than Phuntsok.
Tenzin Jigmey Plays a Separate Character
Tenzin Jigmey rounds out the young cast as Pasang, a Sherpa character distinct from Tenzing's own journey rather than another age of the lead role. His presence adds another layer to the film's portrayal of the Sherpa community surrounding Tenzing's story, beyond Tenzing and his wife Dawa alone.
Why the Three-Actor Structure Works
Spreading one life across three performers is a demanding choice for any film to pull off convincingly. That Shelf's TIFF review noted that Lama and Dalha portray the young dreamer as a child and teen, while the heaviest emotional and physical load falls to Phuntsok.

Norbu Tenzing, Tenzing Norgay's own son and an executive producer on the film, explained the project's purpose in an interview with Climbing magazine. He said his father "put the name Sherpa in the English dictionary," and that the film matters because of that. A film willing to spend real time on the decades before 1953 is part of how that fuller story finally gets told.

We at Wilderness Film Productions worked on the ground in Nepal throughout the production that these three actors now carry between them, handling permits, locations, and logistics as Location Manager.
That groundwork is what we now offer international crews planning their own shoots in the country, and Bhuwan Bharati, our Chief Executive Officer, welcomes enquiries from productions looking for a dependable local partner.
