Tom Hiddleston Plays Edmund Hillary in Tenzing (2026)

Published by Wilderness Film Productions. We served as the Nepal production support company for the Tenzing (2026) shoot.

Introduction

Edmund Hillary was a beekeeper from New Zealand before he became one of the first two men to stand on the summit of Everest. He reached the top alongside Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953, a moment that reshaped mountaineering history. In Tenzing (2026), Hillary is played by Tom Hiddleston, a British actor known worldwide for playing Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also earned acclaim for his role in The Night Manager. This piece covers the real Edmund Hillary, why Hiddleston was cast, and how Wilderness Film Productions supported the Nepal portion of the shoot.

Who Was Edmund Hillary

Edmund Percival Hillary was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1919, the son of a beekeeper. He discovered mountaineering as a teenager during a school trip and kept returning to the mountains through his twenties. He served as a navigator in the Royal New Zealand Air Force during the Second World War before resuming his climbing career.

Hillary joined the 1953 British Everest expedition as part of the New Zealand contingent. Colonel John Hunt, the expedition's leader, paired him with Tenzing Norgay for the final summit push, trusting his judgment at extreme altitude. The two men reached the summit at 11:30 in the morning on May 29, 1953. Hillary photographed Tenzing holding his ice axe at the top. No photograph of Hillary at the summit exists, since Tenzing did not know how to operate the camera.

After Everest, Hillary continued climbing and devoted much of his life to the Sherpa communities of Nepal. He founded the Himalayan Trust in 1960, which funded schools, hospitals, and clinics across the Khumbu region. In 1958, he led the New Zealand party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, reaching the South Pole by tractor. In 1985, he flew to the North Pole with astronaut Neil Armstrong. That flight made him the first person to stand at both poles and on the summit of Everest. He served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India, Nepal, and Bangladesh from 1985 to 1988. His portrait has appeared on New Zealand's five-dollar note since 1992. He died in 2008 at the age of 88.

Why Hiddleston Was Cast as Hillary

Director Jennifer Peedom needed an actor who could project physical capability alongside quiet decency. Hillary was direct, determined, and famously uncomfortable with praise. The role called for someone who could carry that modesty without making the character feel flat.

Hiddleston has played variations of restrained, capable men across his career. His work in The Night Manager showed a character enduring hardship without complaint. That role earned him a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination. His performance in The Hollow Crown series showed a man learning to carry responsibility with composure.

Early in his stage career, he won the Olivier Award for Best Newcomer. He later took on a major studio role in Kong: Skull Island. Hiddleston trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before beginning his acting career. His physical build closely matches Hillary's own tall, lean frame.

The Casting Announcement

The casting was announced in early 2024, alongside Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay and Willem Dafoe as Colonel John Hunt. Hiddleston is one of the most recognizable names in the cast. His presence brings commercial visibility to a story that might otherwise struggle to reach a wide audience.

Filming Locations in Nepal

Principal photography for Tenzing began in Nepal in May 2025 and continued across several locations before the production moved to New Zealand. Hiddleston filmed scenes at Patan Durbar Square in Kathmandu, a UNESCO World Heritage site adapted with period-correct vehicles and costumes to represent 1950s Kathmandu.

The production also filmed in Bandipur, which was transformed to stand in for Darjeeling during the summit period. The Mustang district was used to represent Tibet as Tenzing Norgay's ancestral homeland. Additional filming took place in Sindhupalchok and at Khumjung village near Everest.

How Wilderness Film Productions Supported the Shoot

Wilderness Film Productions, working through our sister company Wilderness Outdoors, managed the ground operation for the Nepal portion of this production. The production chain began with See-Saw Films as the international producer, which assigned local production to India Take One Production. India Take One brought Wilderness Outdoors on as the local production partner, handling permits, logistics, and coordination across every location used.

Our team scouted and photographed candidate sites across Nepal before the director arrived. We assessed accessibility for a crew of 120 people and delivered detailed reports ahead of principal photography. We secured permits for Patan Durbar Square and additional locations across Bandipur, Mustang, Sindhupalchok, and Khumjung. We hired and supervised 45 local crew members, including Sherpa guides, porters, drivers, and translators. We stationed certified high-altitude medical teams at every location above 3,500 meters throughout the shoot.

Aerial and drone work for the production was handled separately from our ground logistics role. That work was assigned directly to us by Plum Productions and See-Saw Films. A small camera crew from New Zealand spent roughly two weeks at Base Camp in October and November 2025 completing the aerial sequences.
