Who Is Luke Davies

Davies is an Australian poet, novelist, and screenwriter born in 1962 in the Sydney suburb of West Pymble. He built his early career in literature before turning to screenwriting, publishing Candy: A Novel of Love and Addiction, a semi-autobiographical novel about heroin addiction that he later adapted into the 2006 film of the same name.

Davies's path was neither fast nor easy, as he openly spoke about years of financial struggle before his career turned, including a 2012 Prime Minister's Literary Award for poetry that gave him the footing to keep working.

The Film That Changed Everything

Davies's breakthrough came with Lion, based on Saroo Brierley's memoir A Long Way Home. The film follows a young Indian boy separated from his family for twenty-five years before using Google Earth to find his way home.

Producer Emile Sherman, who had worked with Davies on Candy and Life, brought him onto Lion specifically because of how he handled difficult, personal true stories. The film earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and Davies himself won a BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay along with a matching Oscar nomination.

Since Lion (2016), Davies has kept returning to real events and real lives. He co-wrote Beautiful Boy, based on the memoirs of David Sheff and his son Nic, about a family confronting addiction, and he adapted News of the World for director Paul Greengrass. He also developed the Hulu series Catch-22 with George Clooney.

A consistent thread runs through all of it: stories about displacement, addiction, or survival, told with restraint rather than melodrama.

Why Davies Was Right for Tenzing

Tenzing Norgay's story sits squarely in that territory. He was a man who attempted Everest six times before finally reaching the 1953 British Mount Everest expedition summit, then spent the rest of his life navigating a world that struggled to recognize him properly.

Pairing Davies with director Jennifer Peedom, who has spent two decades building trust with the Sherpa community, gives Tenzing a screenplay written by someone with a proven ability to translate a real person's interior life onto the page without flattening it into spectacle.

Davies's screenplay only works if the places it describes feel real on screen. Tenzing was filmed largely on location across Nepal, from Patan Durbar Square in Kathmandu to villages in the Everest region, rather than recreated on a soundstage.
